Humbly, Raymond approached. I brought the repair job here on purpose to see it.
I told him bluntly, “You chose to put my son in danger. Why did you act that way?”
With tears streaming down his cheeks, he admitted, “I can’t sleep at night. Every time I close my eyes, I’m back in the cab of that truck. I suffered fainting spells due to a medical condition known as syncope.”
I replied, “But you still chose to drive.”
I couldn’t afford to lose my job, so I would ignore the need to get tested and cleared by a doctor. Then his son died.
Yes, I said in a tone devoid of any feeling. Your selfish decision caused my son’s death.
Raymond sobbed and lowered his head. I convinced myself it wouldn’t happen again. I thought I could breathe easy if I could get you to stop crying.
“To ease your own guilt, you exploit my son while he’s still alive?” I grew even angrier as I approached. “You have no right to interfere in my family’s life. You can’t tell my son secrets and call him comfort.”
As the officer stared at me, Raymond sobbed silently. “Ma’am, we can file charges and get a restraining order.”
I said, “I want the order immediately. I want the school to reevaluate its visitation policy, and I want you banned from this place.”
With eyes full of regret, Raymond raised his head. “I’m not asking for forgiveness. All I wanted you to know is that I never meant to hurt anyone when I woke up.”
I said firmly, “You continue to cause harm, and your intentions don’t change the reality of what you did.”
Like a man who had finally received his verdict, he stepped forward. Ms. Alvarez led Noah back into the room. Noah clutched the plastic dinosaur like a shield, his eyes red.
I leaned down to meet his gaze. “That guy isn’t Ethan, Noah. It’s not appropriate for adults to share their unhappiness with young people.”
Noah stared at me, his lips trembling. Yet he insisted…
“I know the story he told you was false and that his behavior toward you was completely inappropriate.”
Noah murmured, “He seemed so sad.”
“I understand,” I said, “but he has no right to ask children to withhold information from their parents. So Ethan didn’t ask him to give you this gift?”
I forced myself to utter the most painful words: “No.” Ethan didn’t send it.
